I visited a friend in Athens, Ohio, this past weekend. Before going to his place, I did a short tour of downtown Athens. I attended Ohio University from 1994-1998 and then lived there through the summer of 1999 while working at the legendary Burrito Buggy. During the summer of 1999, the 17-year cicadas emerged and took-over the city. It was a magical and nightmarish time of my life, so the way that the world was literally consumed by a biblical-scale swarm of cicadas seemed symbolic to me at the time.
